The Psychometric Validation of Emotional Labor Scale with Staff Nurses

Purpose: This study examined the psychometric validity and reliability of the Korean Emotional Labour Scale with 245 staff nurses. A survey and psychometric approach was used to test validity and reliability of the Korean ELS(Emotional Labor Scale). Methods: Two hundred forty five staff nurses in the University hospital were recruited for this study. Results: Item-to-total correlations and exploratory factor analysis were investigated to test construct validity. Two items in this scale fell below the .3 criteria and were eliminated. Correlations for all of the other 13 items met the criteria(r= .3-.7). Through principal componant analysis, three factors were identified that explained 60.25% of the variance. Internal consistency was supported by Cronbach`s alpha of .83 for the total scale. Conclusion: The results of this exploratory study provide different factors compared to those of original English ELS. Further testing of the ELS is required to validate the subscales and evaluate the instrument`s use with nurses of different organization.
