- Abstract
- Purpose: Most percutaneous vertebroplasty is performed under local anesthesia and the patients are fully conscious during the procedure. This study was done to evaluate the effects of hand-holding and providing information during operation on anxiety in undergoing percutaneous vertebroplasty patients. Methods: The study used a pre posttest quasi experimental design with a nonequivalent control group. Measurement instruments included the state anxiety scale (APAIS), blood pressure (BP), and pulse. Participants were 94 patients undergoing percutaneous vertebroplasty of S hospital in G city, Korea. Thirty patients were assigned to the experimental group Ⅰ, thirty-four to the experimental group Ⅱ, and thirty to the control group. During operation, the experimental group Ⅰ received hand-holding and providing information and the experimental group Ⅱ received hand-holding by circulating nurse. Data were analyzed using χ2-test, One way ANOVA, ANCOVA, Scheffe test with SPSS/PC 18.0 program. Results: There was a statistically significant decrease in APAIS in the experimental group Ⅰ compared to the experimental group Ⅱ and control group. There were significant decreases in systolic BP in the experimental group Ⅰ and Ⅱ compared to the control group. Conclusion: The results indicate that hand-holding and providing information during operation can be used as a nursing intervention for reducing the anxiety of patients undergoing percutaneous vertebroplasty.
