A Study on the Business Incubator Characteristics, Supporting Services and Firm's Performance

This study examines not only the influences of business incubator characteristics on firm's performance. But also verifies the role of support system as a mediator role of those variables based on business incubator literatures. Business incubator's research literatures suggest that business incubator characteristics consist of operating and manager's dimensions. Operating dimensions consist of two variables such as operating goal and network. Manager's dimensions consist of two variables such as competency and experience. Firm's performance is conceptualized as perceived performance based on the sales volume, employment etc. The purpose of this study to empirical identify the influence on the performance of business. Main effect and mediating effect hypotheses derived. Main effect hypotheses was expected as business incubator characteristics have positive effects on firm's performance. And support system had a mediating effect on the relationship between business incubator characteristics and firm's performance. For empirical analysis, survey method was performed. Data were gathered from Seoul, Gyunggi, Busan, Daejeon, Gwangju province's business incubator centers. A total of 238 questionnaires are used for analysis which using the ML(maximum likelihood) procedure in AMOS 17.0 programs. The body of this paper consist of chapters. Chapter 1 - outlines the background, purpose, research scope, method and the structure of this paper. Chapter 2 - surveys the references and identification of the influence on the business performance. Chapter 3 - focuses on the framework of empirical study; hypothesis, and definition of variables and then applies the hypothesis. Chapter 4 - summarizes the major empirical results and managerial applications. The results of this study were as follows. First, business incubator characteristics, operating goals and managers' competency had positive impacts on support systems and performance of firms. Therefore, it is suggested that multi-sided efforts and continuous learning to enhance managers' competency are needed. Second, business incubator characteristics, networks had indirect influences on firm performance through support services. Therefore, based on the results that the networks had influences on performance of firms through support services, more specific studies on cause and effect between characteristics and support services of the incubators are needed. Third, support services had positive impacts on performance of firms. It indicates that the business incubation environment of organizations or facilities which establish such institutes should be developed. Based on the results, business incubator success rely on the operating and managers's characteristics when they perceived valuable resources, and provide whole supporting systems. More over support systems plays a role that enhances the quality of relationship between business incubator characteristics and firms performance because it focus on both internal and external objectives and has a value of benefits. Also stimulates or inhibit their effort, which lead to performance. It is suggested that incubators center more focus on building support system for pursue of enhancing performance of firms.
