Psychopathology in victims of sexual assault

Objectives This study was undertaken to identify the clinical and psychological characteristics in victims of sexual assault.
Methods A consecutive series of 71 cases refered from a one-stop center as victims of sexual assault was assessed in hospital and follow-ups. The demographic data, relationship to their perpetrator, the characteristics of the assault (place, type), the psychopathology following sexual assault, and variables affecting the severity of the psychopatholy or follow-up treatment were analyzed.
Results The majority (49.3%) of victims were between 11 and 19 years of age.
The victims showed a significantly greater prevalence of acute stress disorder(35.2%), as well as post-traumatic stress disorder(15.2%), mood disorder and others. In the psychological test, they showed high scores of BAI(mean 27.58), BDI(mean 30.18), Pa profile(mean 65.59). Number of follow up visits was influenced by perpetrators of sexual assault. (P<0.05)
Conclusion This study showed that most victims of sexual assault suffer from severe anxiety, depression, paranoid tendency and so on. Intervening variables was relationship with the perpetrators.
