Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to the feeling of powerlessness of hospitalized cancer patients.. Method: The subjects were 150 persons with cancer who resided in a hospital. Instruments were the Family Support Scale(5-point, 11-item; Kang, 1984), Self-Esteem Scale(4-point, 10-item; Rosenberg 1965) and Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale(4-point, 8-item;Greer & Waston, 1988). Data were collected by structured questionnaires from July to August 2010, and analyzed with the descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficients, and Stepwise Multiple Regression using SPSS/Win 15.0 program. Result: Mean scores of family-support, self-esteem and powerlessness were 43.40, 27.04 and 16.52, respectively. Powerlessness was negatively correlated with family support (r=-.476, p<.001) and self-esteem(r=-.639,p<.001). Family support and self-esteem were significant preditors (44%) of powerlessness. Conclusion: Family-support and self-esteem are significant predictors of powerlessness. .Hospitalized cancer patients benefit from greater family-support and higher self-esteem in the relief of the feeling of powerlessness.
Key Words: cancer patients, family-support, self-esteem, powerlessness
