- Acid mine drainage growing Acidthiobacillus, Leptospirillum-like, Leptothrix and Gallionella ferruginea in the abandoned Hwa-sun coal mine shows pH vary from 4.30 to 8.46, Fe between 0.04 and 19.69 mg/l, Mn between 0.11 and 4.39 mg/l, SO4 between 82.13 and 1675.54 mg/l. The saturation index of acid mine drainage were supersaturation with respect to amorphous Fe(OH)3, goethite and hematite. In XRD analysis, the goethite, kaolinite and quartz were identified in the yellow and white colored precipitation. The nano-size of cylinder shaped particles were adhered on the surface of Thiobacillus and these particles may be nucleus of the initial goethite. The curved and vibrioid-shaped morphology of bacteria may be Leptospirillum-like microbe in this acid mine drainage. The Leptothrix were observed of empty tube-like filaments structure which was plenty of encrusted with Fe particles and the Gallionella were easy identified in acid mine drainage with their distinctive structure of twisted stalk with micro-framboid material by SEM.
