Abstract
Anodic oxidation is a commonly developed surface treatment for several applications, such as corrosion protection, aspect improvement, joining with polymers, etc. Plasma-induced graft polymerization has consequently proven highly successful as a means to develop functional interfaces for the immobilization of biomolecules. The purpose of this study was to development of bioactive functionalized titanium surface by immobilizing hyaluronic acid (HA) onto ?NH2 functionalized anodizing titanium surfaces to improve biological, physical and chemical properties of titanium. Anodized titanium surface modification was carried out by depositing an ultra thin polymeric layer containing amine groups through plasma polymerization using an allylamine (AA) monomer. A natural polymer HA was immobilized onto the -NH2 functionalized surface in EDC - NHS aqueous solution. The modified titanium surface were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflection fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy and atomic force microscope. Osteoblast like cell, MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on each sample and the cell viability was examined using a MTT assay. 0.2?0.5m pores (approximately) were formed on the surfaces of anodized titanium and HA was immobilized successfully with a covalent bond. The cell viability shows that significantly enhanced viability on the anodized and HA coated anodized metals than on the unanodized metals.
