- Abstract
- Problem-based learning(PBL) is a case-based, self-directed learning method designed to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skill.
Objectives : This study was application and develope of problem-based learning(PBL) suitable for dental hygiene education. The purpose of study was to compared with PBL group and direct instruction group in learning attitude, learning motivation and self-directed learning.
Method : For this study, we sampled 61 dental hygiene students composed of PBL group consisting of 33 students and a direct instruction group consisting of 28 students, Dept of Dental Hygiene, C college.
The period of this study was 2 semester(from March, 2007 to December, 2007). To identify the effect of PBL on learning attitudes, learning motivation, self-directed learning capabilities, and academic achievements of the subjects, we used a t-test and compared pre & post effects of PBL using a paired t-test. we used General Linear Model(GLM) to analyze the effect of PBL on learning attitudes and learning motivation of group.
Result : The results of this study are as fllows
1.PBL group showed better learning attitudes than direct instruction group(p<0.05) and as a result of the GLM, it was found that there was not significant difference in learning attitude between the two groups and statistically significant difference in sub-variables such as learning interest(p<0.05.)
2.PBL group had higher learning motivation than direct instruction group(P<0.05). and as a result of the GLM it was found that there was a significant difference in learning motivation between the two group and statistically significant difference in sub-variables such as attention, relevance and confidence (p<0.05).
3.PBL group had higher self-directed learning capabilities rather than direct instruction group(P<0.05)
4.Academic achievements showed not significant difference in the total scores between the PBL group and direct instruction group(P>0.05). PBL group had higher learning effects and learning process than direct instruction group(P<0.05).
Conclusions : Problem based learning(PBL) for dental hygiene students education was more effective in learning attitude, learning motivation and self-directed learning. therefore this study suggest that PBL contribute to enhancing learning effect through self-directed learning.
