A Study on the Multiple Complementation in English and Chinese

The purpose of this thesis is to give a comprehensive description of [V NP NP] (DOS structure) and [V NP S] structure in English and Chinese and give a comparison of these two structures in these two languages. So that we can figure out the reason why Chinese students learn English more easier than Korean students. English and Chinese have many similarities and also have differences. Especially these features appear in grammatical structures very much. In this thesis I compare these two structures in grammatical aspect and give a brief summary for my thesis statement. In transformational grammar, it is assumed that the double object structure is derived from D-structure of [V NP2 NP1]. In this syntactic structure NP1 and NP2 have symmetrical relation. Kayne(1983) considered 'binary branching' to be most suitable, which has problems with null verbs. Inherent case marking as in Chomsky(1981) and structural case marking with NP incoporation as in Stowell(1981), neither analysis captures the difference between the extraction possibilities of English and Chinese DOSs. Also [V NP S] structures are relevant with the DOS[V NP2 NP1] because they contain two complements that must be assigned case by adjacency condition. In English the movements in [V NP S] which are restricted is possible in Chinese. I also introduce the other variants of the DOS, [V NP1 gei NP2] and [V gei NP2 NP1], are relevant because they seem to contain PPs in postverbal position, which is not allowed by the word order constraint in Chinese.
