Abstract

Factors affecting on loneliness of the elderly living in Facilities for the elderly

Puspose: This study is to identify relations between activity of daily living, social support and loneliness of facilities for the elderly. Methods: The subjects of this study were 150 elderly who lived in facilities of two centers and date were collected fourteen days from October 10. 2008 to 23 of the same month. The questionnaire includes a total of 55 questions witch were categorized into 12 activity of daily living, 12 social support and 20 loneliness. The data collected were analysed with use of SPSS 12.0 program by a descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Scheffe', Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: 1. As a result of analysing activity of daily living, social support and loneliness of the subjects, it was found that the mean activity of daily living was 37.79, social support was 41.36 and loneliness was 43.69. 2. As a result of analysing differences in loneliness of the subjects, it was found that the control according to general characteristics of the subjects, it was found that there was a significant difference in age(F=8.494, P=.000), education background(F=12.765, P=.000), life partner (F=6.566, P=.000), period of facilities(F=7.394, P=.000), spending money of a month(F=5.774, P=.004), state of health(F=2.822, P=.027). 3. As a result of analysing the relations between activity of daily living, social support and loneliness of the subjects, it was found that there was a significant correlation between activity of daily living and loneliness( r=.379, P=.000), and social support and loneliness (r=.371, P=.000). 4. Factors affecting of loneliness was the social support 36%, activity of daily living 40.5%, a life partner and 43.2%. Conclusion: In consideration of results above, it was found that social support, activity of daily living, a life partner and education background. Therefore, this study suggests that social support and activity of daily living reduce loneliness of facilities for the elderly.
