노인병원 간호제공자의 신체적 억제대 사용 감소를 위한 교육 프로그램의 개발 및 평가

The older population is at a higher risk of being physically restrained. Research has continually confirmed the hazards and detrimental effects of physical restraints. The use of physical restraints poses dilemmas for the nursing staff.
The purposes of this study were to develop educational program to reduce the use of physical restraints for caregivers in geriatric hospitals and to evaluate the effect of program on the caregivers’ knowledge, attitude and nursing practice related to the use of physical restraints.
A quasi experimental with non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. Caregivers were recruited from two geriatric hospitals. The sample consisted of intervention group(n=18) that participated in the educational program on physical restraint use, and control group(n=20). The data were collected at two points: prior to intervention and 6 weeks after intervention by using self-administered questionnaires. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, x2-test, Fisher's exact probability, and Mann-Whitney U test using SPSS/WIN 12.0.
6 weeks after intervention, knowledge about the use of physical restraints in experimental group was significantly increased than that of the control group. However, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups with respect to attitude and nursing practice about the use of physical restraints.
Findings indicated that applying the acquired knowledge through educational program to nursing practice in order to reduce the use of physical restraints is necessary. User friendly guidelines for physical restraints, administrative support of institutions, and multidisciplinary approaches are required to achieve this goal.
