Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a social skill training program on interpersonal relationship, self-esteem and social avoidance and anxiety for hospitalized chronic schizophrenia patients in a psychiatric hospital. One group pre-post test was conducted. The subjects of this study were 19 hospitalized chronic schizophrenia patients in a psychiatric hospital in N city. The program was conducted by the investigator for 8 weeks, once a week. The period of this study was from February to May, 2004. Descriptive statistics and paired t-test were used for data analysis.
There was a significant positive change on interpersonal relationship of hospitalized chronic schizophrenia patients after social skill program. However, there were no significant differences on self-esteem and social avoidance and anxiety.
In conclusion, a social skill training program for this study was an effective program to improve interpersonal relationship for hospitalized chronic schizophrenia patients. Social skill training program may be a useful nursing intervention for chronic schizophrenia patients.
