Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate mechanical fit of fixture- abutment-screw interface in the internal connection implant systems.
In this study, each two randomly selected internal implant fixture- abutment assemblys from Certain, Xive, Replace, Ankylos, SS II. were used.
The implants were perpendicularly mounted in liquid unsaturated polyester by use of dental surveyor. Each abutment was connected to the implant with recommended torque value using a torque controller. All samples were cross-sectioned with grinder-polisher unit after embeded in liquid unsaturated polyester, and then fixture-abutment-screw interfaces of all samples by using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope were analyzed .
The results were as follows;
1. In the case of Certain, Xive and Replace, the fit of fixture-abutment interfaces in superior border of fixture to the mating abutment provides intimate contact with butt joint and a little gap of fixture-abutment interface in inferior lateral border of fixture to the mating abutment is provided.
2. In the case of Ankylos and SS II which are connected with tapered conical abutment, the most precise fit and little gap of fixture-abutment interface is provided.
3. In the case of Certain, Xive and Replace, the fit in inferior border of screw head to the mating abutment revealed intimate contact and a little gap in neck and inferior lateral border of screw to the mating abutment is revealed. A gap of abutment-screw interface in Replace system is the most largest in all samples.
4.The leading edge of the screw thread (superior surface) is in contact with the fixture body thread, and the majority of the contacting surfaces are localized to the middle portion of the mating threads. Considerable variation in the contacting surfaces is noted in the samples according to the implant systems.
5. Amount of intimate contact in screw thread to the mating fixture is larger in the case of Certain, Xive, Replace whose screws are seperated from abutments than in the case of Ankylos and SS II whose abutment and screw is made in one piece. A gap of the fixture-screw interface in SS II system is the most largest in all systems.
Conclusively, although a little variation in machining accuracy and consistency was noted in the samples, important features of all internal connection systems were the deep, internal fixture - abutment connections which provides intimate contact with the implant walls to resist micromovement, resulting in a strong stable interface.
