Contemporary society is an era when cultural added value dominates technological added value, and only distinctive products with national images are recognized.
Our sensitivity to culture and preference to cultual products with peculiar images has gradually increased due to the development of IT society worldwide. As advanced countries began to recognize cultural industry as a national strategic industry for the future, plentiful of support has provided to it and each industrial area has made efforts for merchandising.
Accordingly, Korea has paid more attention to cultural industry. Among them, folk paiting is a traditional cultual heritage that can induce aesthetic nature of our people through painting of Korean elements, and as it design element and function have a broad range of characteristics, they provides freedom for contemporary people.
Therefore, this study reorganizes design in traditional but modern sense using folk painting as a motif and produce cultural products with high-added value to establish cultural identity, aiming at enhancing qualitative and economic growth of industrial cultural products.
As an expected effect, this study selects folk painting which is one of our traditional heritage. It is thought that it is very significant to sublime folk painting into national art as the folk painting is an excellent artistic product with spirit of our ancestors and balanced colors. And we can expect the possibility of globalization of our cultural products by reinterpreting peculiarity of Korea in contemporary concept.
This study abstracts motifs from bird and flower paintings of folk painting, character painting, fish and crab painting, and book party painting, and based on the themes abstracted, it applies various techniques such as textile printing, burn-out, free technique(sewing), embroidery and coiling to make products.
Products developed are categorized into decorative ones such as scarf, and neckties and functional ones for interior decoration with modern design.
So this study designs practical cultural products with a use of folk painting to revive our traditional culture and activate our cultural products market where quality design and products are poorly developed. It is suggested that it leads to expansion of textile culture products using folk painting.
In the future, it is expected that development of distinctive and characteristics ethnic design will contribute to improved international competitive power of our country, expansion of industrial products market, increase of customer satisfaction, and their distribution to domestic and international markets, which will lead to qualitative and quantitative growth of cultural industry.
