Abstract

Human beings have continued to develop lighting devices up to now since the primitive age, repeating changes and evolutions. In addition, with the change in housing mode, there are growing needs for multi-purpose furniture providing users with convenience and comfort and enabling to use a given space effectively. This paper presents new dimensional design of lighting furniture using shells with visual effects, on the basis of practicality and formativeness. Methods of the study are as follows; Firstly, in order to investigate kinds of shell, decorating techniques, shell-based products being sold in the market, theoretic analysis through literature was conducted and photos in recently released books were referred to. Secondly, literature research on definitions and history of existing lights, types of source light and classification of lights was performed. Thirdly, through a case-study on lighting devices, a design based on lacquer and shell, the major of the author was formatively developed. The lighting furniture developed in this study was a table maximizing decorative effect and light penetration with gorgeous colors of shell, by using shells as a main material for penetration. As source, light LED(Light Emitting Diode) was used to increase safety, with stainless steel legs having perfection effects. This lighting furniture can be used as a decoration item during the day when lighting is not necessary, while functioning as a mood light at night. Such a combination of furniture and lighting device is expected to increase efficient use of a given space and provide a comfortable environment, while also in formative aspects, broadening the scope of appreciation and ensuring an easier access to users, as time goes by.
