- Abstract
- Wolfgang Amadaus Mozart(1756-1791), together with Franz Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven, contributed greatly to the development of the Classical style which represented the eighteenth century.
Although Mozart lived for only 36years, he composed myriad of works in various styles and genres. Specifically in the concerto form, which was as almost as important as the symphony during the Classical period, his numerous developments and improvements in this genre must be acknowledged. Although Mozart composed unmerous concerto for many different instruments, there is a limeted number of works for the flute. His Flute Concerto No.1 G Major(K.313) effectively shows the flute as a very expressive solo instrument.
Like most Classical concertos, Mozart's Flute Concerto No.1 G Major employs the basic principlses of the traditional sonata form which includes the exposiion, development, and the recapitulation. It has clear manifestations of primary and secondary themes, as well as motivic transformations and repetitions, The motives found in this concerto are quite simple. Howeever, these motives are developed, repeated, and even includes chromatic transformations. The tonal and harmonic structure of the concerto generally follows the traditional harmonic system, and modulation is only occasionally used outside of the traditionan norm except by the use of variant harmonic progression, where by the sequencing of secondary diminished and dominant chords, and chromatic medodic lines are employed. In this concerto, the orchestra and the solo instrument are not independent identities, but that they complement each other.
Therefore, it can be said that Mozart's Flute Concerto No.1 G Major is a work that clearly represents the musical style of the Classical era.
Through detailed, systematic analysis and research, one can improve and enhance one's instrepretation and perfomance of a given work.
