- Abstract
- This study is to examine Frank Stella's works of art created through expansion of objet in the following periods: the period when he was engaged in relief painting by introducing three dimensional space to painting after he moved from modernism to post-modernism, breaking existing frame of purity of painting, the period when he used various angles of geometric space to highlight constructive space and the period when he created new forms completely independently of walls.
Stella appeared by being influenced by abstract expressionism and modernism which dominated the world of art at that time and represented various perspectives as consistent experimental and challenging mind toward new things. Stella's works show characteristics of tautological structure that focuses on consistency and reasonableness in the beginning, but subsequently, they are relaxed and mitigated enough to focus on difference rather than consistency. He experimented variation of canvas, rather than existing standardized canvas based on attention to surface and structure of painting, and presented a new direction on form of canvas by making patterns of pure visuality objet.
Transition in his representative style created relief painting under the changing process of abstract painting in the 20th century, by which equilibrium was maintained between structures and planes. Flat and geometric components of modernists were represented in three dimensional reality, in which illusions were eliminated and real elements were well-organized.
He tested cubism shown in planes through new interpretation of relief painting for which painting is closely associated with sculpture. What he has pursued consistently was to introduce broad media by expanding plane limit of abstract painting, expand his own world of art, for which he induced more space and added more depth. He broke the stereotyped sense of painting and emphasized a concept of open art against existing ' closed art ' His connected objets means meeting of objets and association of objets with images. Through its elasticity and extendibility, it has to respond to changing atmosphere of society sensitively and needs consistent coordination for new interpretation and transformation as industry develops rapidly and consistently.
This study aims at identifying influences of his various representations of objets which are means of expression unlike derivation in common meaning and deviation from context on contemporary art by presenting a new direction that expands an area of painting and the concept of space. His method of creation was intended to associate the works with composite art and presents a new direction to expand the are of painting beyond the plane limit of painting under the contemporary art trend.
