- Abstract
- Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and the treatment of colonoscopic perforation and the availability of conservative treatment as the initial management. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of the 11 patients who had been treated for the colonoscopic perforation. Results: Six perforations were related to diagnostic colonoscopy, whereas 5 occurred from therapeutic colonoscopy. Five patients was diagnosed during the colonoscopy. 6 patients were diagnosed 12-48 hours after the colonoscopy. Three patients who showed clear signs of peritonitis underwent emergency operations. The conservative treatment was done in 8 patients, among them one patient had an operation on the 3rd day after the perforation. The rest of 7 patients who underwent conservative treatment were follow-up to 1 month after the perforation with complete remission, thereby terminating further treatment. Among these patients, one patient had a recurrent perforation on the 33rd day after the initial perforation and operation was done. Conclusion: These results suggest that conservative treatment in a patient with colon perforation could be safely and effectively performed unless there are frank signs of generalized peritonitis.
