- Abstract
- The video art, born in 1960s, offered a turning point where a new type of media art begun in the history of fine art. It also developed the core element in moving images in terms of the interactive art which appeared in the end of the 20th century.
Before the appearance of the objet work of Duchamp in the early 20th century after the Lascaux Cave Art in the Old Stone Age, the painting enjoyed a secure status as an absolute visual art. While, in painting, an artistic catharsis could be found through the contemplation in a static condition, the moving image changing with time in media art that began with the video art arouse a strong excitement and an artistic emotion of a man.
The fact should be noted here that the element of a movement gives a greater stimulus to an artistic emotion of a man. This can be said the reason why the interactive art appeared as the subject in the next-generation fine arts in the end of the 20th century. In other words, the moving element of the interactive art means the occurrence of the direct mutual communication between the work and the audience. This movement of mutual communication is made possible through the complex technology tool such as a computer. Namely, the audience can directly participate in creating works: they can not only touch but also manipulate the work, not merely watching it. The work communicates with the audience as if it were alive and has its own will. Such work of an artificial intelligence was met with great responses from spectators and art historians by providing the newest multi-sensible charm in the history of the visual art. The core in such interactive art is an interaction and feedback which enables the most human communication with a man, which can be the topic in the form of an art in the 21st century.
The interactive artists such as Karl Sims, Myron Kruger, Jeffrey Shaw, Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau encourage the audience to create their own narrative or associate with the interactive work. The interactive art is an art which could induce the participation by the audience, create the immersion effect with the use of various media, and create the artistic experience. Artists will express their ceaseless imaginative power by experimenting the possibility in new media and making a trial which transcends the scope of the limit in media.
This thesis examines the origin and the artistic core element in the interactive art, which takes its place as a new up-to-date media art, in the context of art history.
In particular, the analysis is focused on the world of works by Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau, who appeared as the next generation state-of-the-art interactive artists.
The thorough analysis is also made on the background and the aesthetic elements in the works of Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau, who show the creative world in their works, which makes it possible the artistic consensus with a man by creating the imaginary creature and the environment, which do not exist in reality, with a computer image and the living thing of an artificial intelligence by the use of the engineering programming technology. In the process, the possibility of development to the next generation progressive visual art is also surveyed.
