Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand the magical and everyday meanings of folk tales and to enhance learners' initiative and self-reflection in the creative expression process and their understanding of traditional art culture by making activity works that apply symbols from folk tales. To this end, based on the theoretical review of folk tales, this study sought a direction for learners to approach creatively by referring to and analyzing previous studies and references related to folk tales. In addition, to understand the current state of education applying folk tales, this study examined the proportion of folk tales in nine textbooks based on the revised art curriculum and identified the learning status. Considering the existing textbooks and the limitations of the study, we proposed a teaching guide for this study. For the first-year junior high school students, we studied and proposed a three-dimensional artwork production program using symbols of folk tales that can be implemented in connection with the expression and appreciation areas of secondary art education. Specifically, the symbolism of folk tales was utilized as the main material. We selected folk tales that are visually clear and interesting among traditional art as targets for learners, and organized them to express their imagination freely and creatively through the symbolism shown in the works. Then, the art education program through the symbolism of folk tales consisted of a total of 2 sessions, and the wish frame making activity was implemented. The activity was organized in the order of learning background knowledge of symbolism in folk tales, sketching ideas, and expression activities, and the evaluation sheets filled out after the activity were analyzed. Through this activity, we found that learners were interested in the symbolism implied in folk tales, and we were able to achieve the effect of making them interested in the fact that paintings contain symbolism, not just for the purpose of beauty, decorativeness, etc. In the future, we hope that art education programs using the symbolism of folk tales will be applied as a way to promote interest in and preservation of traditional art, and will be used as a program to enhance learners' creativity and expression.
