Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the acquisition of English tense and aspect with visual aids by Korean middle school students. For this purpose, 20 middle school students in Gwangju participated in a test composed of 17 questions given in written forms and 17 questions given in pictures.
When comparing the correction rates of the present perfect and the past in English, the past recorded significantly higher correction rates, which is consistent with the findings of previous research. This is due to the lack of the grammatical units in Korean, which corresponds to the present perfect in English. Also, there are various usages in the perfect. Among the usages, the perfect of persistent situation marked the highest correction rate, the perfect of result marked the lowest. This is also interpreted that the perfect of result is realized in a different way from the tense or aspect in Korean.
In addition to the above experiment, the overall ccorrection rate of the problems provided in pictures was marginally significantly higher than that of the problems privided in written language, which indicates that the vidual aids lessened the difficulty of understanding. It was found that even in the learning of difficult grammar rules, vidual aids can help students easily access and understand the rules and the contents.
