한국인 고등학생 영어 학습자들의 영어 관사 습득에 관한 연구

Abstract

In this study, I examine the errors of the English articles frequently made by Korean high school students and the process in which the proper uses of English articles are learned. On the basis of the analysis, I emphasize the necessity of article education and of creating an effective article learning method. In the previous study, the usage of the English articles was investigated and compared to the Korean language, which does not have an article system. In addition, we examined the article errors and article acquisition patterns commonly made by speakers whose native language lacked an article in their mother tongue. For the purpose of this study I had 14 high school students in Gwangju participated in the experiment in which it was investigated whether the participants' English grades, English interest, and English learning period had an effect on the acquisition of articles, and whether there was a difference in acquisition for each article type. Moreover, in this study, the usage of articles was classified into 3 for the indefinite articles and into 4 for the definite articles to find out which area of the article usage was more difficult for the participants. The statistical data was analyzed by a logistic regression in a mixed effect model, using R. The acquisition of articles was positively related to grades. Not only the grades but also the learning period and interest in English had significant effects on the acquisition of English articles. However, the difference in the proficiency of the types of article did not show a significant interaction with English grades, English interest, and English learning period. The only exception was for English learners with a short learning period of less than 3 years. Their correction rate in the indefinite article was slightly higher than that of the definite article. This is due to the fact that learn the indefinite article first in the premature and intermediate states of their language learning. The type of usage that students understood well was to describe a class of things or people, which is also accounted for by the fact that it is the most basic and first usage. This study suggests that it is necessary to devise a teaching-learning method for articles that matches the interests and English levels of high school students.|본 논문에서는 한국 고등학생들이 빈번하게 범하는 영어 관사 오류를 알아보고 영어 학습자들의 관사 습득 양상을 살펴보았다. 이 연구의 목적은 한국어 화자들의 관사 오류와 습득 양상을 살펴봄으로써 관사 교육의 필요성을 제고하고 나아가 효과적인 관사 학습 방안을 모색하는데 있다. 선행연구에서는 영어 관사체계의 특징을 알아보고 영어와 한국어 관사체계를 비교하여 관사에 모국어가 없는 화자들이 주로 범하는 관사 오류와 관사 습득 양상을 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 대상은 광주의 고등학교 3학년 학생 14명이며 남학생이 4명 여학생이 10명이었다. 실험을 통해 참여자들의 영어 성적, 영어 관심도, 영어 학습 기간이 관사 습득에 영향을 미치는지 그리고 각 관사종류별로 습득의 차이가 있었는지 알아보았다. 또한 논문에서는 관사 용법을 부정관사 3가지, 정관사 4가지로 분류한 후 관사의 용법 중 어떤 부분을 참여자들이 더 어려워하는지도 알아보았다. 본 연구는 R프로그램의 혼합효과모형(mixed effect model)을 활용해 로지스틱 회귀모형(logistic regression model)을 적용하여 결론을 도출해냈다. 성적에 따른 관사 습득은 비례하는 것으로 나타났으며 학습기간과 영어 흥미도 또한 영어 관사 습득에 있어 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 영어 성적과, 영어 흥미도, 영어 학습기간에 따른 정답률의 차이는 관사의 종류와는 유의미한 상호작용을 보이지 않았다. 그러나 학습 기간이 짧은 3년 이하의 영어 학습자들에게서 부정관사의 정답률이 정관사보다 조금 더 높게 나왔다. 이는 영어 학습자들이 영어 관사를 접할 때 부정관사를 정규과정에서 먼저 학습하기 때문인 것으로 보인다. 특히 부정관사의 용법 중 그룹 속성을 나타내는 경우의 정답률이 가장 높았다. 이는 학생들이 영어 학습에서 가장 기초적이고 먼저 익히는 용법이기 때문인 것으로 해석된다. 이러한 결과는 고등학교 학생들의 흥미와 수준에 맞는 교수학습법을 고안할 필요가 있다는 것을 시사한다.
