Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the interest, motivation, and satisfaction of elementary school students in English reading classes. An online reading program was used for a reading class, and nine elementary school students participated in this study. Data was collected through surveys and interviews. The results of the study are as follows.
First, the interest in online English reading classes was higher than the interest in English and learning English in general. This is because the students can read books on topics they are interested in through the medium of online animation. As for the motivation, the students’ intrinsic motivation was higher than extrinsic motivation, indicating that elementary students had more intrinsic reasons for learning English. Futhermore, most of the study participants responded that online English reading was helpful for improving their reading ability. They were satisfied with the online reading classes.
Second, the study investigated the differences in interest, motivation, and satisfaction based on the participation period in online English reading classes. Students who participated for more than a year had slightly higher interest, motivation and satisfaction than those who participated for less than six months. But there was no statistically significant difference. On the other hand, in the interviews, the student who participated for more than a year showed higher interest than that who participated for less than six months. Both groups showed more extrinsic motivation than intrinsic motivation and were positive about online reading classes.
Third, the difference in interest, motivation, and satisfaction with online English reading was also investigated by measuring the students’ English reading proficiency. There were no significant differences in interest, motivation, and satisfaction between the two groups from both the survey and interview analyses.
Based on the results of this study, some implications for classes using online reading programs for elementary school students' English reading were suggested. In addition, some suggestions were presented to increase students' interest, motivation, and class satisfaction.
