중·고등학교 무용수업 참여 여학생의 신체이미지와 외모관리 행동이 자아존중감에 미치는 영향

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of body image and appearance management behaviors on self-esteem in middle and high school girls participating in the dance class of a dance academy or a sports club and present basic data for girls’ improvement of self-esteem. The following conclusions were drawn.

1. This study compared body images according to socio-demographic characteristics. In the education background, the response of middle school girls was high in appearance evaluation and dissatisfaction with weight, while that of high school girls was high in dissatisfaction with appearance. In the average monthly income of the household, the group ranging from two million to less than three million won had a high response in all sub-factors. In the participation experience, the response of the less than six months group was high in dissatisfaction with weight and appearance, but that of the more than two years group was high in appearance evaluation. In the monthly participation frequency, the response of the less than twice group was high in dissatisfaction with weight, that of the four times group was high in dissatisfaction with appearance, and that of the five times group was high in appearance evaluation. In the monthly participation time, the less than one hour group had a high response in all sub-factors.

2. This study compared appearance management behaviors according to socio-demographic characteristics. In the education background, the response of middle school girls was high in clothing style seeking and weight management and that of high school girls was high in makeup and skin care, hair care, and cosmetic surgery and body shaping. In the average monthly income of the household, the response of the group ranging from two million won to less than three million won was high in clothing style seeking and hair care, that of the group ranging from three million won to less than four million won was high in cosmetic surgery and body shaping and weight management, and that of the group ranging more than four million won was high in makeup and skin care. In the participation experience, the more than two years group had a high response in all sub-factors. In the monthly participation frequency, the response of the three times group was high in hair care and that of the five times group was high in clothing style seeking, makeup and skin care, cosmetic surgery and body shaping, and weight management. In the monthly participation time, the response of the less than one hour group was high in clothing style seeking, makeup and skin care, cosmetic surgery and body shaping, and weight management and that of the more than two hours group was high in hair care.

In the average monthly income of the household, the group ranging from three million to less than four million won showed a high response in all sub-factors. The more than two years group of the participation experience, the more than five times group of the monthly participation frequency, and the less than one hour group of the monthly participation time also showed a high response in all sub-factors.

4. In the analysis of the correlation among body image factors, appearance management behaviors factors, and self-esteem factors, all sub-factors of body image had a significant correlation with all sub-factors of appearance management behaviors and self-esteem. Moreover, all sub-factors of appearance management behaviors had a significant correlation with all sub-factors of self-esteem.

5. The appearance evaluation and dissatisfaction with appearance factors of body image had a positive effect on social self-esteem, whereas the dissatisfaction with weight had a negative effect. The appearance evaluation and dissatisfaction with weight had a positive effect on individual self-esteem, whereas the dissatisfaction with appearance had a negative effect. Moreover, the hair care, cosmetic surgery and body shaping, and weight management factors of appearance management behaviors had a positive effect on social self-esteem, but makeup and skin care had a negative effect. Hair care and cosmetic surgery and body shaping had a positive effect, but makeup and skin care and weight management had a negative effect.
