Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate the concept and types of christian dance as a branch of dance and determine how Big 5 factors affect self-achievement and religious well-being of those who participate in christian dance.
To achieve the objective, cluster random sampling method was used to collect data from 254 men and women who are currently involved in Christian Dance program at churches located in S and G city, Jeonam. Excluding some obscure data, 236 were finally utilized for this study.
To measure Big 5 Personality factor, the survey that was adapted by Yu Tae-yong, Lee Gi-beom, and Ashton(2004) was used as a measurement tool for data collection.
In order to measure the sense of self-achievement, Noh Hae-jin revised the scale that was already developed in Yoon Ye-kyung's 1996 paper and reused it after a feasibility and reliability test. As a dependent variable, the measure of religious well-being was developed by Paloutzion and Ellison (1982) and modified by Park Ji-ah(2003). The variable scale was divided into a 5-point Likert scale ('not at all' = 1 point, and 'very good' = 5 points).
The collected data is analyzed using SPSS 18.0 statistical program to examine the relationship between personal characteristics (gender, age, faith history, participation period, participation frequency, participation time), self-fulfillment, and religious well-being. Regression analysis was performed. In addition, a correlation analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between personality 5 factors (neuroticism, extroversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) and self-achievement and religious well-being.
The resultant findings from analysis of the effects of Big 5 factors on Self-Achievement and Religious Well-Being of participants in Christian Dance, as follows :
First, there was some correlation in the relationship between personal characteristics and Self-Achievement, but no effect on one another.According to gender, it shows a negative correlation with Self-Achievement, and there is no relationship in age, faith history, duration of participation, frequency of participation, and participation time. Also, personal characteristics did not significantly affect self-achievement.
Second, there was some correlation in the relationship between personal characteristics and Religious Well-Being, but no effect on one another.
There was a positive (+) correlation with Self-Achievement according to the participation time, and there was no relationship in gender, age, faith history, duration of participation, and frequency of participation. And it was found that personal characteristics had no significant effect on Religious Well-Being.
Third, the relationship between Big 5 factors and Self-Achievement was found to have a correlation, and it was found to have some influence.
Among the sub-variants of Big 5 factors, neuroticism showed a negative correlation, and extroversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness showed a positive correlation. In addition, neuroticism and extroversion had a significant effect on the effect of Big 5 factors on Self-Achievement, but no significant effect on openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness.
Fourth, there was some correlation in the relationship between Big 5 factors and Religious Well-Being, and some influences were found.
Among the sub-variants of Big 5 factors, extroversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness showed a positive correlation, and neuroticism and openness did not show a correlation. In addition, in the effect of Big 5 factors on Religious Well-Being, agreeablenes had a significant effect, and the rest of neuroticism, extroversion, openness, and conscientiousness did not.
The significance of this study is that it examined the effects of the Big 5 factors of Christian Dance participants on Self-Achievement and Religious Well-Being. At least, it was confirmed that middle-aged and seniors who participated in Christian Dance, amongst the general public, had a significant correlation with their sense of Self-Achievement through the activities of the Christian Dance program. The correlation with Religious Well-Being also showed a significant correlation in three of the five sub-variants, suggesting that there was some relationship in raising Religious Well-Being.
