Abstract

Jing-mei comes to understand her mother's dream for her by realizing the changeable nature of the jade necklace and joining Joy Luck Club both of which are the mother's legacies ranging across two cultures. Wayverly suggests that her "two-faced" identity disrupts cultural stereotypes of Chinese Americans, discovering that her "tricky" identity has been handed down from her mother. On the other hand, Rose comes to realize the importance of speaking out with the help of her mother. Finally, Lena embraces her mother's "tiger spirit" that defies patriarchal gender stereotypes. In The Joy Luck Club, the mothers facilitate the daughters' inventions of dynamic identity by remembering the painful past, sharing their stories, and entrusting the daughters with the task to create their own identities.
