미국드라마 활용 문화학습을 이용한 영어수업이 초등학생들의 영어 흥미도 및 듣기・어휘력에 미치는 효과

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of the culture learning through American TV dramas. Language and culture are interconnected. To learn a language, we have to learn a culture, and to learn a culture, we have to learn a language. For this study, 32 students for grade 3-6 in elementary school were participated. American TV drama ‘The Middle’ was selected considering participant students’ age and English proficiency. American TV drama classes were conducted for 40 minutes 6 times for 3 weeks. To analyze the effect of the culture learning, pre- and post- surveys, vocabulary and listening tests were conducted. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the students’ attitudes significantly positively changed after experiencing drama-based English classes. And students’ attitudes towards their own culture and foreign culture positively changed. Second, American TV drama-based learning significantly contributed to the students’ attitude and interest for English study. These results show that American TV dramas can motivate students to learn English. Third, the students’ scores of English vocabulary and listening comprehension were improved after the three weeks drama-based classes. A significant statistical difference was observed between the pre- and post-tests. Using authentic materials such as American TV dramas offer real-world English and cultural input to EFL students. On the other hand, only 3rd grade students’ post-test scores were not higher than the pre-test in listening. It presumed American TV dramas were not effective for the lower grades. And American TV dramas can easily used at school or at home as an English learning material. Therefore it can be considered to be an effective English teaching and learning tool.
