ABSTRACT

A Study of Korean EFL Middle School Students'
English Classroom Anxiety

The purpose of this study was to examine Korean EFL middle school students' English classroom anxiety in native English-speaking teacher's class. The study attempted to solve the research questions regarding what constitute the foreign language classroom anxiety and what the relationships between the English classroom anxiety factors and English achievement. The participants of this study were 95 Korean girls middle school students of 1st grade and the 2nd grade. The questionnaire consisted of the background questions and the modified FLCAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale). The English scores on the school final test were used in order to achieve the research purpose. The collected data was analyzed statistically through reliability analysis, descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. Three anxietysourceswereemployed:‘communication apprehension anxiety’,‘fear of negative evaluation’and‘test anxiety’. The results of this study showed that descriptive statistics showed that there was low English classroom anxiety. The result showed that in descending order of three anxiety sources, communication apprehension anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, and test anxiety in sequence. And the correlation analysis indicated that there was a significant correlation (r=.789) between communication apprehension anxiety and English learners' achievement. The main cause of the result is that the participants' age was low as 13, 14 and they were doing communication language teaching with native English teachers every week. And they didn't have a test because of enforcing their exam-free semester. This study also has implications: 1) teacher needs to use facilitative anxiety positively and reduces debilitative anxiety properly; and 2) school has to make effective environment for English study in the classroom and develop useful program and materials to reduce students' Engilsh classroom anxiety.
