Abstract
All the experiences that students encounter greatly affect not only their school lives but also their social and working lives as well. Particularly in the case of music related group activities, the experience is an instrumental stage that improves one's sense of independence and concentration, as well as self-confidence and sociability, and serves as a positive factor in adulthood. Therefore, it can be claimed that music experience in adolescence plays an important contributive role in enjoying a happy life.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various schools and extracurricular musical activities and music interest on psychological well-being. Building upon this as the foundation, this study aims to provide suggestions for the direction of adolescent music education by discussing the effects of music activity on adolescent emotions and psychology. To achieve these research objectives, the following areas of research were selected: first, the relationship between music experience and music interest was investigated; second, the correlation between music activity experience and psychological well-being including as a sub-category of it, emotional well-being and behavior control was investigated; third, the correlation between adolescent music interest and psychological well-being was explored.
In order to achieve the study's objectives, 128 freshmen students attending are high school located in district 'B' of Jeollanam-do were selected and ansered, music experience questionnaires and interest inventories were particalar. Based on these results, a psychological well-being scale was analyzed and was used as data. To ensure smooth analysis throughout this process, SPSS19.0 for Windows was used, and a frequency analysis, reliability analysis, and cross analysis were performed for the data. In addition, two groups were created comprised of those with music activity experience and those without, and a t-test was conducted to determine the significance of the differences between the two groups. The following results were obtained.
First, the results of examining the differences between the levels of music interest based on different level of music activity experience showed that students with music activity experience had higher music interest than the students who had no musical activity experience, and it was found that past musical activity experience had a positive effect on music interest.
Second, the results of examining the differences in psychological well-being according to musical activity experience, where psychological well-being was sub divided into emotional well-being and behavior control, showed a negative correlation between whether or not there was music activity experience and emotional well-being and behavior control, and the psychological well-being was higher for the group with music activity experience, as well as higher behavior control, compared to the group without experience.
Third, the results of examining the correlation between music interest and psychological well-being showed that the psychological well-being is obtained more firmly by higher music interest; the higher the music interest, the higher the psychological well-being became.
From these results, it can be confirmed that adolescent music experience has a significant effect overall on music activities and emotions. In addition, it was found that music activity experience was related to music education, psychological well-being, and music interest, and musical activity experience had an effect on emotion and psychology.
Various experiences in music can be the basis of music education, and the start of a life enjoying music. Therefore, there is a need for continuous care and support for the better quality, and higher satisfaction of adolescents' lives by adolescents in ordor to their psychological well-being up. For students to be able to think positively of the music and to act voluntarily, teachers and instructors should conduct classes effectively dealing with the students' great interest.
