Abstract
The objective of the study is to analyze singing parts in 7 music textbooks of the 2009 Middle School Curriculum and the current status of singing activities at school for promoting singing education, and compare and analyze the analysis of music textbooks and students’ awareness. For this, the researcher classified singing parts in the 7 different middle school music textbooks and analyzed the frequency of singing. In addition, S middle school students in G metropolitan city were surveyed to investigate students’ awareness of singing education and impacts of music classes on the students. In the study, the goal, contents and standards of music education of the 2009 Curriculum were explored; and then the role of textbooks, meaning of singing, and necessity and educational effects of singing education.
The study result is as follows:

First, the 7 types of music textbooks included a total of 342 songs and classified the singing parts into a separate chapter; in each chapter, the songs were divided into smaller units by theme or part so that students can learn based on a single theme. Such classification by theme or part seems to be for students to learn a musical concept in depth.
Second, as a result of analyzing the proportions of genres by publishing company, chorus took up the highest proportion (109 out of the total of 342 songs), and film music the lowest proportion (9 songs). Considering that the difference between chorus and film music is 100, it seems necessary to make a balance of genres.
Third, the number of common songs for singing out of the 342 songs in the 7 music textbooks was investigated. As a result, there was not a single song included in all the 7 textbooks. Meanwhile, there were 271 songs included in only 1 type of textbook. As such, it was confirmed that textbooks by each publishing company include a range of songs.

In addition, the study investigated the current status of singing education at school focused on textbooks and students’ awareness. The research target was 211 1st grade students from S middle school in G metropolitan city. As for the current status of singing education, the most favored singing part by the students was pop songs (K-Pop) (182, 86.26%), while only 4 chose international folk song (1.9%). While over a half of the students favored pop songs (K-Pop). there were merely 27 pop songs out of the 342 songs in the 7 textbooks. This is considered significantly less than 109 choruses or 93 foreign folk songs. Moreover, students’ favorite pop songs were given less weight, while students’ least-favored international folk song were given too much weight. Therefore, it is necessary to refer to students’ preference when selecting songs for textbooks so as to arrange singing songs in balance by genre; less weight on international folk songs and more weight on students’ favorite pop songs.
Based on the study result, it is necessary to include various genres of songs in balance in textbooks of the next curriculum, considering the students’ preference for more various and quality education. Such efforts are considered the foundation for qualitative development of music education.
