EFL Middle School Students’ Perceptions about English Newspapers in Education: Reading and Writing Skills and Learning Motivation

The purpose of this study was to examine perceptions of EFL middle school students about English newspapers in education, focusing on reading and writing skills and learning motivation. Ten middle school students at a private institute participated in the study. The class using English newspapers was conducted for 30 minutes three times a week from April 4 to April 15. Before the experimental class, the students were asked to fill out pre-questionnaire about their perceptions of reading and writing and learning motivation in English. In for the experimental class, the students read newspaper articles and performed related activities such as guessing titles, searching topic sentences, summarizing the articles and debating. And they also wrote some reflections after reading the articles. After the experiment, they were asked to fill out a post-questionnaire. The content and number of pre- and post- questionnaire items were the same. The participants’ perceptions were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and conducting paired sample t-tests. The results of the study were summarized as follows: The difference between pre-post in perceptions about writing skills was significantly different. That is, the scores on the post-questionnaire were significantly higher than pre-questionnaire. However, the post scores on the perceptions in reading skills and learning motivation were higher than pre-questionnaire, but the difference was not significant. In the interview, the student showed that they felt their English abilities were improved and were willing to study more with English newspapers.
