- Abstract
- This study examines the interrelated issues of Orientalism and masculinity in David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly. Built upon a true story and Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, Hwang’s M. Butterfly exposes the damage of Orientalism done not only to the East but to the West through a love story between two men, Rene Gallimard and Song Liling. Furthermore, the play subverts the gendered fantasy of Orientalism by disrupting the stereotypical understanding of the East as feminine and the West as masculine. The first chapter of the thesis discusses Gallimard’s vulnerable masculinity in the West. In the second chapter, I examine Song’s manipulation of Gallimard’s vulnerable masculinity and Orientalism. And then, I analyze Gallimard as a victim of his own fantasy. The thesis concludes by recapitulating the significances of Hwang’s dramatization of the gendered racial fantasy of Orientalism.
