Abstract
This study attempts to analyze Ukulele teaching certificates and training courses and curriculums of after school programs in order to perceive current existing problems and seek the systematic solution in the field.
As a first method to achieve the purpose of this study, several related subjects such as Ukulele, after school programs for special ability and aptitude, instrumental music education, and private music teaching certificates, were reviewed in preceding studies. Second, the current condition of domestic music private certificates was examined. Third, the current conditions of the certificate authorizing organizations that issue the domestic Ukulele instructor certificates were investigated and presented in graphics, and the type of certificates and qualifications have been listed. Forth, through the further in-depth interviews in person with Ukulele instructors teaching for after school program at elementary, middle and high schools in Gwangju metropolitan city, types of certificates and obtaining processes were observed. Fifth, training courses and curriculums were investigated. Sixth, the result of interviews was analyzed. Lastly, the final conclusion was confirmed by the data built from methods listed above.
The conclusion inferred based on the research methods is as follows:
First, it is proven that certificates for Music psychology and Ukulele are two most registered private music certificates in the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training(KRIVET).
Second, domestic Ukulele teaching certificates are in the system to be registered in KRIVET. Also the numbers and types of organizations that issue the certificates and licenses continue to increase.
Third, Ukulele 'leaders' certificate recorded the highest percentage amongst those for after school program. Each certificate features variety in many factors such as issed organization, grad and title and no solid consistency in exterior formats. Therefore, these factors should not be considered as an objective criteria to evaluate qualification of certificate.
Forth, the Ukulele instructor training curriculum is varied for each organization and has no consistency. Even though it is expected to be a professional training course, teaching method is neglected than playing technic.
Lastly, the considerable numbers of instructors who promptly obtained certificates without being systematically educated, are currently working for cultural centers or after school, but there is no way to determine their qualifications. Therefore, organizations that issue the certificates should evaluate the teaching ability fairly and carefully until the future instructors acquire their certificates and increase professionalism.
As a researcher, I hope this study can be used as base line data for Ukulele instructors to increase their teaching ability, and for schools to employ the Ukulele instructors and manage the general teaching quality in their after school programs as well.
