Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the English chants and songs’ affective attitudes such as interest, self-confidence and attitude about English for the first, second and third grade elementary school students in Korea and explore the adequacy of the songs and chants for students through surveys and interviews. To verify the effects of English chants and songs, a number of theories about the effect on the affective domain, chants and songs were reviewed, and the experimentation was continued for 3 months.
To reach this purpose, the questionnaires were distributed to the 1 teacher and 63 students in the local private academy. Also, 10 students were interviewed with the detailed questions. The collected data were analysed based on the research questions. Finally, the implication and suggestions were made.
According to the survey results, the English chants and songs method increased the students’ interest, self-confidence and attitude in English. Also many students wanted to learn chants and songs with various activities, especially rhythmic movements and games, according to the result of questionnaires. Therefore it is desirable to use more activities considering students’ interest.
Next, the preference of the songs surveyed was a little lower than the chants. So it is necessary that we pay more attention to grow more affective teaching skills for teachers.
In short, the findings of the study indicated that the students’ affective domain in English are improved as a result of English chants and songs. In addition, the students showed higher levels of interest, confidence and attitude in English. Thus, it can be inferred from the findings that chants and songs are an effective and useful teaching method by encouraging and motivating students. Therefore English chants and songs should be practiced more frequently in English class.
