- Abstract
- The aim of this thesis is to analyze racial tension and gender conflict in Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea focusing on main female characters, Antoinette, Annette, and Christophine. I examine the complex identity of Antoinette, a Creole woman who is situated between white Europeans and Afro-Caribbeans in the West Indies. And then I analyze Annette's ambivalent position in the dynamics of race and gender by examining how she is both a perpetrator and a victim. Through Antoinette, Annette, and Christophine, Rhys suggests that patriarchy and imperialism are inter-connected forces to exacerbate lives of women in the West Indies.
