Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the improvement in English listening and reading ability in the 1st graders of middle school students through educating on flapping (or tapping) in General American English. As learning content, various flapped expressions were provided in the form of a word and across word boundary. Those concerning the allophone of /t/ and /d/ were also thaught in order to find out if the students distinguish flapped sounds from the other ones of /t/ including /d/. This process was carried out for 4 weeks. The following results were obtained from the analysis of the pre- and post-English listening and reading tests. The results of this study show that educating on flapping in American English does not have a significant effect on the improvement of listening but it does have a significant effect on students' reading proficiency. Thus, educating on flapping in American English helped enhance reading proficiency of 1st graders of middle school students.
