- Abstract
- The purpose of this thesis is to study female characters in James Joyce’s Dubliners. Unlike some critics who have criticized Joyce as a misogynist, I suggest that Joyce should be regarded as an author who had a deep interest in gender issues. I first examine Eveline in “Eveline” and Maria in “Clay” as women who are victimized by a patriarchal society. And then, the study analyzes Mrs. Mooney in “The Boarding House” and Mrs Kearney in “A Mother” in order to discuss their thwarted attempt to improve their daughters' lives. Finally, I posit that Joyce acknowledges women as a source of change through Lily, Ivors, and Gretta in “The Dead.” By examining these female characters in Dubliners, the study highlights Joyce's implicit criticism of the harsh reality in which women were situated in early-twentieth-century Dublin.
