Abstract
This research was conducted with 39 university students in basic level class with an average of TOEIC 321 points at a private TOEIC academy located in Gwangju City for 7 weeks from September 14, 2015 through October 30. The purpose of this research was to find effects of English lessons utilizing English newspapers on improvement of TOEIC reading comprehension and the students' perceptions (satisfaction level and interest) toward newspaper use in reading instruction.
For this study, 39 college students whose TOEIC proficiency were participated in a basic level. The experiment of this research was carried on for 20 minutes 6 times during the period of 17 days from September 14 through October 30. The class was taught with various and interesting newspaper articles from the Korea Herald similar to TOEIC articles. Pre-reading and post-reading comprehension tests using mock TOEIC test items. To examine the participants' perception (satisfaction, interest), the participants were asked to fill out surveys about reading instructions before and after the experiment. The collected data were analyzed by conducting paired sample t-tests for reading achievement using SPSS 23 program, the participants perceptions were calculated by using descriptive statistics.
The result of the research can be summarized as follows: the effect of using English newspaper in TOEIC reading comprehension class can be concluded as significant on the subjects’ reading comprehension skill improvement. The perceptions (satisfaction and interest) of the participants, positive results are demonstrated as 68.8% of the subjects responded that they are interested in the class. Furthermore 68.7% of the subjects replied that they are satisfied with the utilization of English newspaper.
