- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to discover how Korean English learners perceive and produce the English front vowels /i/, /ɪ/, /e/, /ɛ/ and /æ/. Data for this research were gathered through a perception test and a production experiment, which were conducted with 34 second grade students at N high school.
The results of the perception test indicate that most students were inable to differentiate /i/ from /ɪ/ and /ɛ/ from /æ/, respectively. The results of the production experiment also showed a lack of distinction of the /i/ vs. /ɪ/ and /ɛ/ vs. /æ/ in terms of F1 and F2.
There was a tendency that students who distinguish the front vowels in their perception also distinguish them in their production.
In conclusion, this study shows a strong correlation between perception ability and production skills.
