A Study on the Revitalization of Secondary School Orchestra Through Analysis on and Student Orchestra

The purpose of this study is to analyze Venezuela program and to suggest application methods for secondary school orchestra. This study conducted theoretical consideration on El Sistema, classified nation's student orchestra, and reviewed methods of operation. To this end, questionnaire was conducted on 32 student orchestra members of ‘C Girls' Junior High School' located in Gwangju Metropolitan City. Questionnaire referred to theoretical background and preceding research, and investigated problems and what needs to be improved for student orchestra through questionnaire results. The results of this study identified that El Sistema is being practiced with an intention to improve a sense of accomplishment, a sense of purpose, and self-regard of students, and moreover, it was being suggested for the changed society in a variety of ways. The effect distributed around the world and established a world class program. It was replicated in nation's student orchestra based on the El Sistema program and is currently being conducted. The purpose of El Sistema is similar but orchestra participation of students is gradually decreasing due to imperfect teaching method and contents of the program, and even satisfaction with participation of members of the student orchestra was very low. According to a question on the questionnaire, ‘how satisfied are you with the orchestra activity’, ‘very satisfied’ was 9%, ‘slightly satisfied’ and ‘average’ were 38% each, and ‘not satisfied’ showed 16% of distribution. This signifies that students had no choice but to participate even though they were not satisfied with student orchestra. Based on the finding, this study suggested methods of operation, composition principle, and practice program of student orchestra for revitalization of secondary school student orchestra, and it would be necessary to improve satisfaction level of students through voluntary participation, not obligatory participation, for many students to participate actively in orchestra activities.
