ABSTRACT

The Effects of Fun Factors on Adjustment to School Life in Taekwondo

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of fun factors on adjustment to school life in taekwondo training. For the purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 300 upper grade elementary students attending taekwondo halls which registered as a member for the Taekwondo Association in G Metropolitan City as of 2014. 297 responses were input to a computer and the data was processed using SPSS WIN Ver. 18.0(statistical package program). Frequency analysis was conducted to examine socio-demographic characteristics. Cronbach's alpha(α) and exploratory factor analysis was used to analyze the validity and reliability of a questionnaire. T-test and one-way ANOVA was also conducted to analyze a difference among socio-demographic characteristics, fun factors, and adjustment to school life. A post-hoc test was made using scheffe in case of a significant difference. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the effects of fun factors on adjustment to school life.
The results were as follows.
First, a difference in fun factors and adjustment to school life was analyzed according to socio-demographic characteristics in upper grade elementary students training taekwondo. Girl students' average was high in escape from daily routine(M=4.250), physical fitness and health(M=4.482), interpersonal relation(M=4.238), win and competition(M=4.614)(fun factors) and teacher relationship(M=4.236), schoolmate relationship(M=4.469), classwork(M=4.138), and school rules(M=4.281)(adjustment to school life). There was no significant difference in teacher relationship(t= -3.518*) according to sex, in school rules(t= 2.750*) according to a grade, and in all fun factors and adjustment to school life according to a training period. But there was a significant difference in win and competition(t= 3.680**) according to a training level.
Second, the effects of fun factors on adjustment to school life were analyzed. Teacher relationship was greatly influenced by escape from daily life(t= 2.639**), physical fitness and health(t= 2.425*), and interpersonal relationship(t= 2.165*). Schoolmate relationship was greatly influenced by physical fitness and health(t= 2.990**), interpersonal relationship(t= 3.888***), and win and competition(t= 2.692**). classwork was greatly influenced by physical fitness and health(t= 2.395*), interpersonal relationship(t= 2.322*), and win and competition(t= 2.587*). School rules were greatly influenced by escape from daily life(t= 2.092*).
In conclusion, escape from daily life, physical fitness and health, and interpersonal relationship was important fun factors influencing teacher relationship. Physical fitness and health, interpersonal relationship, and win and competition was important fun factors influencing schoolmate relationship. Physical fitness and health, interpersonal relationship, and win and competition was important fun factors influencing classwork. Finally, escape from daily life was important fun factors influencing school rules.
