The purpose of this research is to find out how middle school students perceive handicapped people. To do this research, we analyzed students’ perceptions according to their gender, experience of taking integrated classes, school records, and their family’s economic status. Based on the analysis, this research aims to develop programs aimed at reducing students’ prejudice toward handicapped people and encouraging more positive attitudes and empathic understanding.
The participants of this research were four hundred middle school students residing in M city. The process of the data to find out their perception regarding the handicapped was done through an independent variable t-test for their gender and the experience of taking integrated classes. One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was done in terms of their school test records and their family economic status. All statistics were computed using the 21stversion of IBM SPSS Statistics. The significance level of the statistics was .05, and Post-Hoc Testing was done using the Scheffe method.
The results are as follows:
First, middle school students’ perceptions of the handicapped showed that it was neutral level.
Second, there were significant statistical differences in perception of
the handicapped according to students’ gender. Female students showed a more positive attitude in their perceptions of the handicapped than did the male students.
Third, students’ experience taking integrated classes did not show statistically the significant differences. In other words, there was no difference between the students who had experience in integrated classes and the students who did not.
Fourth, there were significant differences in students’ perception of the handicapped based on their school test records. Though there was not a substantial difference regarding students’ prejudice toward the handicapped or their friendships with the handicapped, the group with the higher school test records showed better or stronger perception in terms of the attention and empathy for the handicapped.
Fifth, there was no statistically significant difference in students’ perception of the handicapped according to their family’s economic status. In other words, middle school students’ perceptions of the handicapped do not appear to be significantly different based higher or lower economic family status.
