ABSTRACT

A Study on the Level of Educational Practice for the Clothing and Self-Expression in Clothing Section of Technology & Home Economics in the Middle School

The purpose of this study is to understand the demands of learners for the clothing and self-expression by examining and analyzing the clothing and self-expression units in clothing section of technology & home economics in the middle school and to provide the basic data for teaching students to live their self-directed lives based on what they learned.
To achieve this goal, I analyzed 12 different books of 2009 revised technology & home economics and conducted a preliminary survey by referring to related literatures on December 9th, 2013.
As a result, I corrected and supplemented the questionnaire based on the result of a preliminary survey. Also, I conducted a survey for 731 female students including 253 first year students, 244 second year students and 234 third year students.
In this study, I conducted a statistic data processing by using SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) ver 18.0 after data coding of the questionnaire and analyzed with the level of significance at p<0.05.
The result of this study is as follows.
First, it indicated that the level of education practice for the clothing and self-expression when they are highly interested in clothing. It showed that there is a statistically significant difference only in matched clothing for about the level of educational practice for the clothing and self-expression unit depending on clothing purchasing behavior. It indicated that the level of educational practice was high when they easily recognize the clothing and self-expression unit, prefer the unit more than other units and think that it is helpful in their actual lives.
Second, it indicated that the level of educational practice for the clothing and self-expression is entirely high. It suggests that students live their socially satisfactory lives by observing proprieties with their clothing.
Third, it indicated that the necessity of the clothing and self-expression unit is entirely high. It suggests that this is because teenagers are more likely to be interested in their appearances and have a desire to express their beautiful appearances and personalities with clothing. As it indicated that they recognize the high level of practice when recognizing the high necessity of clothing and self-expression, the result was same as the previous studies.
Fourth, it indicated that there is a statistically significant difference in the level of practice in each grade for the clothing and self-expression unit. It showd that the level of practice in first year students was the highest while the level of practice in third year students was the lowest. I consider that the level of practice in the higher grade students is low because they cannot remember and practice the clothing and self-expression unit when time passes although it is useful for first year students to learn and apply it to their actual lives.
In conclusion, it indicated that the level of educational practice for the clothing and self-expression unit is entirely high while the level of practice becomes low when the grade is high and time passes. Therefore, we need to develop a variety of learning methods and teaching materials to consistently apply and practice what they learned.
