The Effects of Environmental Causes on Refree Decision-Making in Amateur Basket League.

This research has significance in helping the enhancement of athletic performance through precise and clear judgment of umpires by arousing deteriorated authority of umpire and increasing credibility of umpires’ judgment through analyzing circumstantial factors which can influence a fair call.

Questionnaire was taken against thirty referees with official referee’s qualification who are currently active in domestic elementary, middle, high school and university matches. IBM SPSS 21.0 was used for the collected data influencing the referee’s call, and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was calculated in analysis of frequency and reliability, independent sample correlated t test and one-way ANOVA were conducted, and Scheffe’s posteriori test was conducted.

Results of analysis for each hypothesis are as followed.

1. When there were coaches’ complaints, the result showed that there was greater influence on: female referees over males, younger referees over older ones, referees’ with less than a year of career, international referees, referees with sportsman background.

2. When there was a mistake in judgment, the result showed that it had greater influence on referee’s call when the referee was male, younger, had shorter career, first class referee, and without sportsman background.

3. When the stadium’s environment was poor, the result showed that it had greater influence on: female referees, referees in their thirties, referees with over three years of career, international referees, and referees without sportsman background.

4. Irregular game schedules showed to have greater influence on: female referees, referees in their thirties, referees with over five years of career, international referees, and referees without sportsman background.

5. The relationship between a referee and players or coaches had greater influence on referee’s judgment when the referee was: male, referee with less than a year of career, first class referee, and referee with sportsman background.

6. When referees’ stamina becomes demanding, it had greater influence on: female referees, referees in their thirties, referees with over three years of career, international referees, and referees without sportsman background.

7. Inadequate treatments for referees had greater influence on: female referees, referees in their thirties, referees with less than a year of career, international referees, and referees without sportsman background.

Effect of referee’s call was shown to be fair overall. However, when there was a coach’s complaint or mistake in judgment, it seems to have greater influence the younger the referee is and the shorter the referee’s career is. Also, in case of stadium environment, irregular schedule, and fitness-matter, they had greater influence on: female referees, referees in their thirties, referees with over three years of career, and referees without sportsman background.

Furthermore, among seven factors influencing the referee’s call, the influence due to relation with players or coach, and coach’s complaint was lower than the whole influence of the referee’s judgment, and the influence from mistaken judgment, stadium environment, irregular schedule, demanding stamina, and inadequate referee treatment showed to have higher influence than the whole influence of referee’s judgment. Also, as for the difference derived from referee’s call on influencing the overall variables, the result showed greater influence on: female referees, younger referees, referees with less than a year of career, international referees, and referees without sportsman background. Therefore it is considered that expansion on referee’s number, investment on training referees, extension of training, treatment on referees, and stadium environment improvement should proceed in order to allow referees to make a fair and stable judgments.
