Effecs of Reading and Debate on English Writing Skills, Interest, Participation, and Satisfaction: Focusing on the 6th Graders

This study has investigated the effects of reading and debate on English writing, interest, participation, and satisfaction of elementary students. Questions were established as follows to achieve the objective:
1. Does reading & debate activity influence writing in English by elementary students in terms of fluency(total words) and complexity(total words/total sentences)?
2. Does reading & debate activity influence interest, participation, and satisfaction of elementary students?
For the study, an experiment group of 29 and a control group of 27 grade 6 elementary students were designated. The test for interest, participation, and satisfaction, both experimental and control groups were conducted at the very first time before starting this study and the very last time when the study finished. The reading and debate activity was only constructed with the experimental group before writing and control group wrote without the activity in the period of 4 weeks.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, reading & debate activity didn't bring a positive effect on fluency of the English writing of elementary school students. However, the increase on fluency was shown from the writing of control group.
Second, reading & debate activity didn't bring a positive effect on complexity of the English writing of elementary school students. However, the results has shown steady increase in both experimental and control groups.
Third, reading and debate activity didn't bring a positive effect on interest, participation, and satisfaction of elementary school students. In interest and participation, the result showed increased number and especially, in participation, the number of control group was higher than experimental group for post-test. In satisfaction, control group showed less decrease than experimental group in the post test.
In conclusion, this research showed that reading & debate isn't effective to improve their English writing and interest, participation, and satisfaction. However, students showed slight improvement on fluency and complexity in their writing that means constant effort makes them developed. Reading and debate activities in the English class should be implemented with enough time and abundant topics.
