Abstract
As a research to discuss perceptions on causes of learning problems and effective instructional methods, this study first looks into different perceptions of teachers at elementary school and middle school as well as students at middles school in connection with learning problems caused by diverse types of learners (typically-developing students, students with underdevelopment, students with learning disorder and mentally-challenged students) and then, investigates these learning methods that the teachers and the students consider most effective depending on the types of the learners.
In order to achieve the research goal, the study conducted a survey targeting 104 teachers in an elementary school and a middle school located in G Metropolitan City and Jeollanam-do and 150 students at middle school. Of those respondents participating in the survey, 103 samples of the teachers and 150 samples of the students were selected as a material for the final analysis.
According to the main findings of the research, first of all, compared to the teachers at middle school, the other teachers at elementary school perceive causes of the learning problems depending on the types of the learners more variously and seriously at the same time, and the teachers at elementary school appeared to believe that the individualized instructional method works most effectively with every type of the learner. Second, in terms of how the students understand the learning problems and the effective instructional methods according to the types of the learners, they came up with this average-below perception, and the study noticed no significant difference. However, when it comes to the students who have not experienced integrated education, compared to those who have received integrated education before, they turned out to have different perceptions in connection with the typically-developing students and the students with learning disorders. Last but not least, in regard to how differently the teachers and the students perceive the learning problems and the effective instructional methods depending on the types of the learners, the study c onfirmed diverse differences in their perceptions.
Based on the results of the investigation above, the study developed its discussion knowing that the implications for education for persons with disabilities would limit the study itself.
