Music appreciation programs lead students to communicate with composers through music and help them understand the natural characteristics of music through listening to music. Through these programs they can learn how to think as a result of these educational activities. The music appreciation program has an effect on the internalization of students through an appreciation of music and they can be engaged in diverse musical activities such as singing, playing musical instruments and writing songs. They can have aesthetic eyes and rich sensitivity to music which leads to a desirable sense of values with regards to music.
Gordon's learning sequence starts from audiation, the ability to understand music which is not heard physically. Audiation predicts what will follow next based on what is heard. It's not at all like auditory sensing which occurs at the same time a sound is received. That is, it can be said that audiation indicates that students understand music.
This study focused on Gordon's learning sequence which can be applied in schools for proper music appreciation education. In particular, instructions for appreciation programs where Gordon's learning sequence was applied with middle school students were presented. It aims to enhance the audiation ability of students and have an effect on learning. For this purpose, first, this study looked into Gordon's learning sequence, the current status and problems in musical appreciation and musical appreciation in middle schools from a theoretical basis. The body of the study examined four western musical pieces which were published in seventeen current musical textbooks for middle schools; that is, Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67, ‘Spring’, one of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and Moldau in Ma Viast by Bedrich Smetana. Using these four songs, this study presented teaching and learning plans for musical appreciation to enhance audiation suggested by Gordon. Then, as an actual musical activity, students expressed tempo and dynamics physically.
Through this study, it is expected that students will feel and express music directly and actively. As they experience audiation through diverse actual musical activities, they can develop an interest in music and actively participate in appreciation activities.
