In 21st century, transition from the industrial society to the informational, global, polycentric society based on knowledge and technology has been in need of manpower which is specialized, creative and comparative. Such changes of society and civilization also require shift of educational paradigm.
Vocational change caused by sophistication of industry and the following increased needs for higher education have lead many students who are vocational high-schoolers choose to enter universities which have also made other students enter upon studies. As the number of college graduates increases, getting a job comes to be difficult and ironically, industry is in trouble of lack of technicians required, which is socio-economical problem.
Accordingly, we, in this study, recognized shift in social, cultural perception caused by government’s job seeking policy for the vocational high schools and necessity of study about plans for job seeking program which is the industrial-vocational high school’s differentiation. In addition, we examined awareness of students in K high school which is specialized in beauty culture
From this study’s results, we drew the following conclusion.
First, the reason students entered vocational high school specialized in housework, industry is generally getting a job in industry. They have worried about their path and professional as they have become higher grades. Most of students who want to set about work after graduation hope to leave Jeju Island for the mainland industry. This result can be analyzed that there are not many good-quality industries enough for Jeju students’ needs. For their employment, students try to get certificates related to their major or participate in field work.
Most of students think that school’s job program has positive influence on themselves. It turned out that students participate in school’s job program to decide their own paths, get information about the companies in which they want to start their career. Also, they showed their intention for participating in current job programs.
Second, the most satisfying program among school’s job program is different from the grade; while first-graders chose school’s presentation for employment and its job fair, second, third-graders responded field experience study and field work. That could be because the job camp and the job pair helped students’ parents to lean about the industry and the field experience study and field work were helpful for students’ decision for job seeking.
For problems of school’s job programs, while female students considered that some programs never reflected students’opinion, male students said lack of willingness for participation is the problem. Majority of students thought that job program’s establishment and operation do not enough contain requirements of students. Some students insist that some programs which are unsatisfactory should be improved.
Third, for efficient operation and improvement for vocational high school specialized in housework, industry and its job programs, we asked students to respond to the question, “Should operation of school’s job program is required to go on?” and students answered that school’s job programs are needed for their job seeking. On the contrary, students who have no interest in employment or entrance into college said that they did not feel any necessity of participating in school’s job programs. They did not want job program’s expansion but they hoped there would be leadership course, social marketing education, and business starting education. They also hope publication of the guide-books for beauty culture employment
For improvement required for job programs, students hoped that they receive job guide which keep in close contact with three-grades curriculums. They thought that field work, practical affair-oriented education and good counseling teacher are needed. Also their opinion was that their headmaster’s concern about students’ employment is needed. Not only third-grader but also freshmen, juniors, parents and middle school students should be the target for job programs’ promotion.
