Abstract
A Study on the Effect of ‘Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy’ on young children‘s(particularly ones from multi-cultural families residing in Korea) sociality and adaptability to their school lives.

Korean Traditional Dance represents the Korean people and their deep rooted culture. It encapsulated the soul of the nation’s people. This study aims to render a sense of identity, as Koreans, to young school children from ever growing multi-cultural families, who are living in Korea. Furthermore it endeavors to develop an educational therapy program for children’s better sociality and adaptability to their school lives. The study has been conducted under two main categories, and four subordinate questions for each category.


1. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the sociality of young children from multi-cultural families in Korea?

1-1. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the diligence of young children from multi-cultural families in Korea?
1-2. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the relationship with other people of young children from multi-cultural families in Korea?
1-3. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the sense of responsibility of young children from multi-cultural families in Korea?
1-4. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the cooperative skills of young children from multi-cultural families in Korea?

2. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the adaptability of young children, from multi-cultural families in Korea, to their school lives?

2-1. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the relationship of young children, from multi-cultural families in Korea, with their teachers?
2-2. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the relationship of young children, from multi-cultural families in Korea, with their peers?
2-3. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the schoolwork of young children from multi-cultural families in Korea?
2-4. What effect does 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' have on the sense of abidance of young children, from multi-cultural families in Korea, by their school rules?

The study has been conducted as follows.

The subject of the study is made up of an Experimental Group(eight second graders from multi-cultural families, from D elementary school, in Naju) and a Comparative Group(eight second graders, from non-multi-cultural families from G elementary school, in Naju). Prior to the experiment, sociality and adaptability of all students from the two groups were precisely measured from April 1, 2013 until April 5, for one school week.

To put the task of the study into practice, the Experimental Group had a total of 16 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' classes. The students in the Experimental Group were put into the class, which commenced on April 6, twice a week, and each class’s duration was sixty minutes. Contrarily, the Comparative Group did not partake in any 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' classes.

The Data of the study have been analyzed by the statistical software, SPSS(Version 14.0). To examine what effect 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' has on children's sociality and adaptability to their school lives; that is in particular children from multi-cultural families, SPSS(Version 14.0) calculated the average and standard deviation of pre-to-post scores between groups. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), by repeated analysis, verified if the difference between the two groups is meaningful or not.

Results of the study by data analysis are as follows.

Firstly, children's sociality of the Experimental Group compared to that of the Comparative Group was positively affected by 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy'. Secondly, children from the Experiment group, who took part in 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' classes, were proved to be more advanced in the adaptability measurement test, compared to that of Comparative Group children.


In conclusion, we were able to recognize that 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' has a positive impact on the development of children, from multi-cultural families in Korea, in terms of their sociality and adaptability. Taking all the results from this study into consideration , young children from multi-cultural families would certainly not only learn better skills in socializing, but would also adapt more easily to their school lives, if 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy', was incorporated within elementary schools' curricula. Therefore, it is considered necessary that schools, especially elementary schools, introduce 'Korean Traditional Dance Routine Therapy' to their young students. It is recommended this be undertaken with the aim of embracing ever-growing numbers of children from multi-cultural families, in Korea, as an entity for Korean nationality.
