The 2009 Revised Music Curriculum emphasized the importance of expression in music. In particular, singing expresses beauty of a musical piece and aesthetic elements represented in it with voice. Singing provides integrated experiences in music as well as it enhances ability to express and read music This study aims to systematically analyse the area of expression in music textbook B and develop effective singing teaching and leaning methods. For the purpose, the nature and purpose of the 2009 Revised Music Curriculum and teaching objectives in each area were analysed. With respect to the subject of the study, the importance of musical expression as a subject was examined and a model for active expression was presented. The study referred to bibliographical data to achieve the study purpose and singing education and its importance were examined through the review of previous research theses. The comprehensive direction of the 2009 Revised Curriculum, the objectives of music department and those for middle school music department were understood in order to explain what to teach in the area of expression in singing. Based on the results of the analysis, this study developed a teaching plan for effective singing education centering on subject songs published in the middle school music textbooks. Of the subject songs published in middle school textbooks, tunes and words of five songs were analysed and teaching plans for each song were presented: ‘Santa Lucia’, an Italian song, and ‘Geujipap’, 'Yetmaeul’, ‘Eolgul’, and ‘Dongmusaenggak’, Korean songs. Singing education is easily available as a starting point of music education. As well, it provides integrated experience of art beyond the development of singing ability. It is a very effective learning method for physical, linguistic, social, emotional and cognitive development as well as it provides opportunities to develop creativity and achieve self-realization. So, it is believed that it is a high time for schools and art circles to make every effort in order to reexamine the true value and meaning of art education through singing expression education. Also, through validification of the teaching and learning method presented in the study, more effective teaching strategy should be developed. The conclusions of the study are presented as follows: Singing education can be easily approached as a starting point of music education. As well, it provides integrated art experience beyond the development of singing ability and opportunities to develop creativity and achieve self-realization. Also, it is a very effective learning method for physical, linguistic, social, emotional and cognitive development.
